Bear Attack - Franklin County, Florida

News Release - Bear Attack

News Release: Associated Press
Florida Wildlife Commission
December 22, 2014

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) -- A 15-year-old Panhandle girl is recovering in a hospital after being attacked by a bear.

Sherry Mann told Panama City television station WMBB that her daughter sustained significant injuries to her legs, back, neck and face.

Mann says the attack happened when the girl was walking her dog behind a supermarket in Eastpoint, which is east of Panama City in Franklin County. She says the bear released the girl after the dog lunged at it.

The girl was transported to Bay Medical Center Sacred Heart Health System in Panama City.

Leah Reeder is expected to undergo surgery. Her mother says the most significant injuries are to her face.

FWC law enforcement officers and biologists immediately responded to the scene and have initiated trapping and removal efforts.

It was the third bear attack in the region this year.

Apalachicola National Forest Prescribed Burning Today in Liberty County

News Release: US Forest ServiceDecember 4, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The U.S. Forest Service is prescribed burning in the Apalachicola National Forest today.

The 1,500 acre prescribed burn will take place in Liberty County south of Telogia, between State Road 65 and Forest Road 105. The burn will improve wildlife habitat, eliminate vegetation build up and reduce the threat of wildfires.

People are reminded that the smoke they may see today and tomorrow in this vicinity is not coming from a wildfire. Motorists are cautioned to drive slowly with lights on while traveling in smoky areas. Drivers should be particularly cautious in areas where prescribed fires have taken place when it is foggy. Morning fog can mix with smoke and decrease visibility further.

This is one of many prescribed burns the Apalachicola National Forest is doing during the 2014 prescribed burning season. Today’s burn is in burn unit 8 (see the Apalachicola’s planned burn): http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5438893.pdf

Individuals who are sensitive to smoke may continue to monitor us at http://www.fs.usda.gov/news/apalachicola/news-events.

Adventures of a Woman in the Woods
Adventures of a Woman in the Woods

I was not always engulfed in a life of racing through a maze of winding wooded roads to get a glimpse of a darting deer or wandering through my backyard in my nightgown and flip-flops with a flashlight looking for a wild boar. And being caught up-river in a tiny jon boat in the middle of a lightning storm was never on my to-do list either. I have, however, found myself in the mist of these adventures and more during my life as a woman in the woods in Northwest Florida.

Wood Stork
Wood Stork
(Mycteria Americana)

I recently spotted this wood stork in the Apalachicola National Forest. As of August 28, 2013, it is classified as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; however, there have been proposals to downlist it to threatened. The wood stork is the only stork that presently breeds in North America. In the United States there is a small breeding population in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Sign your kids up now for Ocala Outdoor Adventure Camp

Do your children long to spend their summer days in the great outdoors? Would they love the chance to learn about fish and wildlife from experts, and hike or canoe with other children their age?

Then it’s time to sign them up for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Ocala Outdoor Adventure Camp. The facility is located in the Ocala National Forest.

The summer camp is for boys and girls, ages 9-15, and focuses on fish and wildlife conservation, outdoor skills and firearm safety. The camp offers six one-week sessions beginning June 16.

The camp’s primary goal is to help children become conservation-minded and good stewards of our fish and wildlife resources. They learn these skills and values through fun and educational, hands-on activities such as fishing, canoeing, swimming, hiking, archery and many other outdoor programs.

Tuition is $295 per camper per week and includes lodging, food, program materials and instruction. Each week-long session is divided into four groups, based on individual interest: hunter safety, archery skills, wilderness outdoor skills and the exciting fishing program.

The Ocala Conservation Center is on a 57-acre peninsula at Lake Eaton – an area rich in history and wildlife. It is 20 miles east of Ocala in Marion County, in the heart of the Ocala National Forest. The facilities are rustic, yet comfortable, with air-conditioned cabins and dining hall. The classrooms are fishing piers, shooting ranges, nature trails, Lake Eaton and the vast Ocala National Forest.

For more information about the camp and to inquire about availability, please call 352-625-2804.

"Humanity's Hope - Camp H"

Hunting season in Florida is coming to a close for the 2013-2014 season. It's time to put away the guns, bullets, and bows. I would like to suggest some entertaining reading to keep the excitement of hunting alive during the hot summer days ahead. But this hunting is not for your typical deer, hogs, and turkeys. This hunt is for something quite different. I invite you to join in the journey presented by my son-in-law Greg P. Ferrell, the author of "Humanity's Hope: Camp H." He describes his book this way:

"It is more than your typical zombie survior story, it is much more . . .

After a seemingly unprovoked attack starts the world onto the path of devastation one lone group of friends band together to survive through the Zombie Apocalypse. They create a camp in which they can raise their kids and hopefully survive long enough to one day start rebuilding their world. Camp H, as they have affectionately come to call their new home standing for Hope or Human depending who you ask. Camp H is a small part of a neighborhood on the outskirts of Tallahassee, FL. It is perfectly situated where the surrounding area provides them the protection and the resources to make it day to day.

One girl in the camp named Hope is trying to adapt to a life she never imagined possible. She along with her younger sister and brother, have had to learn survival skills in order to make it one day to the next. All this is preparing Hope, who is unaware of her greater destiny, to one day be the Hope for Mankind.

While the residents of Camp H are surviving in Florida one lone man up against immense odds executes a plan of eradication on the unending hordes of undead. He uses his skills honed through the years as a member of the Navy Seals to put down as many of the slabs as he can in the hopes that he will stop them before they destroy the human race.

Scattered throughout the world a group of people, part of a secret society, are trying to put the pieces back together of a broken world so they can once again regain their lofty positions and continue to play their role as the puppeteers of mankind.

The paths of some of these survivors will cross and lives will be lost, destroyed and changed. Will they have the strength to continue? Will their goals change? Nothing will be the same when the truth comes out.
