News Release: US Forest ServiceDecember 4, 2014
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. â The U.S. Forest Service is prescribed burning in the Apalachicola National Forest today.
The 1,500 acre prescribed burn will take place in Liberty County south of Telogia, between State Road 65 and Forest Road 105. The burn will improve wildlife habitat, eliminate vegetation build up and reduce the threat of wildfires.
People are reminded that the smoke they may see today and tomorrow in this vicinity is not coming from a wildfire. Motorists are cautioned to drive slowly with lights on while traveling in smoky areas. Drivers should be particularly cautious in areas where prescribed fires have taken place when it is foggy. Morning fog can mix with smoke and decrease visibility further.
This is one of many prescribed burns the Apalachicola National Forest is doing during the 2014 prescribed burning season. Todayâs burn is in burn unit 8 (see the Apalachicolaâs planned burn): http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5438893.pdf
Individuals who are sensitive to smoke may continue to monitor us at http://www.fs.usda.gov/news/apalachicola/news-events.

Do your children long to spend their summer days in the great outdoors? Would they love the chance to learn about fish and wildlife from experts, and hike or canoe with other children their age?
Then itâs time to sign them up for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissionâs (FWC) Ocala Outdoor Adventure Camp. The facility is located in the Ocala National Forest.
The summer camp is for boys and girls, ages 9-15, and focuses on fish and wildlife conservation, outdoor skills and firearm safety. The camp offers six one-week sessions beginning June 16.
The campâs primary goal is to help children become conservation-minded and good stewards of our fish and wildlife resources. They learn these skills and values through fun and educational, hands-on activities such as fishing, canoeing, swimming, hiking, archery and many other outdoor programs.
Tuition is $295 per camper per week and includes lodging, food, program materials and instruction. Each week-long session is divided into four groups, based on individual interest: hunter safety, archery skills, wilderness outdoor skills and the exciting fishing program.
The Ocala Conservation Center is on a 57-acre peninsula at Lake Eaton â an area rich in history and wildlife. It is 20 miles east of Ocala in Marion County, in the heart of the Ocala National Forest. The facilities are rustic, yet comfortable, with air-conditioned cabins and dining hall. The classrooms are fishing piers, shooting ranges, nature trails, Lake Eaton and the vast Ocala National Forest.
For more information about the camp and to inquire about availability, please call 352-625-2804.
