![]() 2012 is starting out to be a very good year for me. Yesterday, I harvested this good looking 8-pt from one of Florida's public wildlife management areas. I had some help from my brother Robert's hunting dogs. They did a great job flushing him out out of the woods so that I could make that dead-on shot. There's a few more weeks of dog hunting season remaining. I'm looking forward to more good days.

Nov 27, 2011 Hunting Stories, Thanksgiving Day DeerHunting stories by Kenny Presnell - Thanksgiving Day Deer Permalink -- click for full blog post "Hunting Stories, Thanksgiving Day Deer" Nov 22, 2011 "A Time to be Thankful"It's that time of year again when the cool, crisp mornings fill the Florida air with a hint of Fall. The urge to go hunting seems to overcome us as the whiff of lighter pine lures us toward the woods, kindling memories of past hunts with family and friends. The walker hounds, beagles, coonhounds, blueticks, and plott hounds seem to sense it too. They are no longer lazy and listless from hot summer days. Instead, they are frisky and excited as if someone told them of the coming hunts. The hounds are sitting on ready, but are you? If you haven't already done so, you need to check your seasons, pick your place, pack your gear, get your camera, and finish up those Mama's to-do list items that hounded you all summer. It's time to ease off into the woods as quietly as the leaf of a sweet gum tree falls gently to the ground. What you don't want to do is hit the woods sounding like a truck load of acorns pounding on a hot tin roof. That is if you're still hunting. Then, of course, if you're hunting with dogs, it's not gonna be anywhere near quiet. Their barks and howls can be heard echoing joyfully through the trees. We all have different reasons to go hunting. It doesn't matter if you're hunting squirrels, deer, hogs, or the elusive don't-want-to-gobble Fall turkey, be it the eastern or the Osceola. Or you may even be on a photo safari. The main thing is to just be out in the great outdoors. And while you're out there, take a minute to contemplate your blessings and give thanks to our Creator. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving! ANSWER: Permalink -- click for full blog post "Hopkins Prairie Unit Question " Nov 9, 2011 Quail-hunting regulations change at Babcock-Webb WMA
For immediate release: November 8, 2011 Beginning with the 2011-2012 hunting season on Babcock-Webb WMA, harvest will be limited to 15 percent of the pre-hunting-season quail population estimate, to ensure sustainability with a goal of increasing the population. Consequently, the number of daily quail quota permits available to hunters during the 2011-2012 season will be 432, down from 856 in the previous hunting season. Along with this reduction in harvest, the FWC has adjusted the current days open to the taking of quail on Babcock-Webb to Wednesdays and Saturdays only, at the request of area sportsmen. Bird dog training is allowed in the recreational area from Sept. 17 through Feb. 12, and during the small game season in zones A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H on those days when daily quail harvest permits are not issued. Modifications to harvest regulations on Babcock-Webb WMA got almost unanimous support from sportsmen who attended public meetings or responded to requests for public comment on the changes. If you’d like more information on quail hunting at Babcock-Webb WMA visit Babcock-Webb WMA or call the FWC regional office in Lakeland at 863-648-3200. Nov 8, 2011 "Men Not Working"

Kenny Presnell Nov 4, 2011 Accreditation team invites public comments about FWCAttention Florida Hunters! Here's your chance to provide comments concerning the Florida Wildlife and Conservation Commission's policies and procedures, management, operations and support services. News Release
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking reaccreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA), and members of the public are invited to offer comments. A team of CFA assessors will arrive Dec. 13 to examine all aspects of the FWC's policies and procedures, management, operations and support services, Col. Jim Brown, director of the FWC's Division of Law Enforcement announced. The FWC has to comply with approximately 213 standards to receive reaccreditation status. As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team. Comments must address the agency's ability to comply with CFA standards and be submitted in writing to the CFA at P.O. Box 1489, Tallahassee, FL 32302, or info@flaccreditation.org. A copy of the standards is available by contacting Katie Purcell, public information coordinator for the FWC's Division of Law Enforcement, at 850-617-9521. "The CFA assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from other accredited Florida law enforcement agencies," said Capt. Dean Kelly, the FWC's accreditation manager. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices and other places where compliance can be observed. If the CFA determines the FWC has complied with the appropriate standards, the reaccreditation will be active for three years. This voluntary process is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. In Zone B, archery season is from October 15 to November 13, 2011, for antlered or antlerless deer by bow or crossbow. Crossbow season continues from November 14-18, 2011, for antlered deer only by crossbow or bow. In Zone C, archery season closed October 16, 2011. However, crossbow season remains open from October 17-21, 2011, for antlered deer only by crossbow or bow. In Zone D, archery and crossbow season begins October 22 to November 23, 2011, for antlered or antlerless deer by bow only unless you have a disabled permit for crossbow (which would also be needed to hunt in most WMAs.) For those of you who hunt in Wildlife Management Areas, please be sure and consult the WMA brochure for the specific area you want to hunt. In case y'all haven't noticed, it's been a hot, dry summer. Because of this, some of the deer you may see may not be as fat or as well-developed as in years past and you may not be seeing as many deer because some of them didn't make it through the hot summer. But rest assured, they are still plenty good to eat. If you're having trouble finding deer in your usual hunting places, you may have to adapt to denser cover closer to existing water sources because most of the forest has dried up. If you do find these places, you may see more deer than usual gathered around these areas. So don't give up, adapt to your surroundings, overcome any obsticles, and you'll find the deer.
