January 27, 2012, QUESTION: I would like to go hog hunting in Orange or Lake counties. Any suggestions to where to go in those counties? I'm down visiting family for a couple of weeks and thought I'd try hog hunting. Always wanted to do it. I've only hunted
whitetails in Connecticut.
ANSWER: Welcome to Florida. We have some pretty good hunting down here in in the public wildlife management areas. One good place near where you're at is the Green Swamp Wildlife Management Area. It is on 50,692 acres of public land located in Lake, Polk, & Sumter Counties. There is no size or bag limit when hunting wild hogs there.
Another nearby area is Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area. It is on 30,701 acres in Orange County. There no size or bag limit when hunting wild hogs there either.
There are other good hog hunting wildlife management areas a little farther away from Lake and Orange Counties. Some with pretty good reputations are: Three Lakes WMA, Triple N Ranch WMA, and Bull Creek WMA, in Osceola County; and Flying Eagle WMA in Citrus County.
You can find links to these brochures on my website.
You do need a hunting license as well as management area permit to hunt on any public land in Florida. You can find out information on how to obtain those HERE.
Hope you enjoy your stay in Florida. Good luck with the hunt!
