Where can I quail hunt in Florida?

by Jason
(Ontario, Canada )

September 12, 2010, QUESTION: I just had a few questions about hunting in Florida. I am from Ontario,Canada. We are planning a trip around Christmas time, and we would like information about quail hunting in Florida. What areas are good? We would be bringing our bird dog with us. I have read stuff about the Blackwater area and the Apalachicola area. I was wondering which one is better for quail? If you could give a hand finding a decent spot to hunt that would be great. If not, could you give me a name or link to somewhere where we could get good information? Thanks, Jason

ANSWER: Good to hear from you, Jason. I understand that the deer and bear hunting is great in Canada. People travel from here in the States to Ontario to participate in those adventures. Welcome to Florida for quail hunting. You asked about the Blackwater and Apalachicola areas for hunting quail. We received a similar question from a previous visitor to the website. Here is a link to that question.

The Carr Unit in Blackwater and the Apalachicola quail enhancement areas are both primarily quota hunts. All previously released hunting dates quotas have been filled. Any future hunts that will be opened will not have their dates released until approximately 2 weeks before the scheduled hunt; and as previously stated in the above link, those dates will not be announced until surveys are complete.

There are no other public hunting areas that are managed for quail by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC). You may want to visit the FWC website for more information.

Because I am not an avid quail hunter who is familiar with other areas on public land, the only other place I know of for hunting quail is at a private hunting preserve. I can recommend Southern Legends Plantation located in South Georgia, which is 32 miles north of Tallahassee, Florida. If you decide to contact Southern Legends Plantation, let them know we sent you.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Florida and have a successful hunt for our little “southern rockets,” commonly referred to as quail, be it in North Florida or South Georgia.
