Running Deer Dogs in Fox Pen?

by Derek
(Northwest Florida)

March 12, 2012, QUESTION: I have a few dogs that will run deer very good. Will it hurt to run some of them in a fox pen while deer season is closed? I've heard people say no and yes.

ANSWER: Derek: This is a very controversial subject. Since you've spoken with other people on the matter, and now you're asking my opinion, if a deer-dog runs anything other than a deer in a pen, you run the chance of ruining the dog for deer only. Because when things get slow, a deer-only dog will either find a deer or come back. Whereas, an I-just-wanna-run-something type dog can easily get distracted and either leave a deer race or take the deer race and move it to whatever it feels like running with the other dogs following. So, yes, I think it would hurt a deer dog to run in a fox pen.
