Klayton, My First Gobbler
I was 13 and it was Pennsylvania's youth turkey hunt. I was using my gun my grandfather gave me a old stevens side by side 12 gauge. My uncle took me and the first two calling locations we didn't hear a thing. So on the third location as soon as the striker hit the slate, 4 or 5 gobblers answered one from behind and at least 3 in front of us. They gobbled every time we called. And I was trying to get a grip on my shotgun because of my slippery $5 gloves. So my uncle Tim told me to take them off quick and get ready. Not 2 minutes later, I saw a red head stick out around laurel. Once it stepped out, I let the lead fly and I missed. It went flying toward us, so I pulled the back trigger and dropped it. It had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 3/4 inch spur on the left and 7/8 on the right. It turned out to be a good day. And I harvested it within half a mile from my first deer.
