This alligator snapping turtle was making his way across a lonely stretch of forest road when I snapped his photo. Sometimes humans think the grass is always greener on the other side. I suppose in turtle thinking, the swamp is always wetter on the other side; which could explain why this big fellow was taking a stroll down the ole dirt road. These turtles are the largest freshwater turtle in the world; and make their homes in the wetlands and rivers of the southeastern United States. They can grow to an average weight of 150 to 180 pounds and live to be an average of 80 to 120 years of age. Alligator snapping turtles are fun to look at, but you might want to keep your distance. They are known to have a quick and forceful bite that could quickly sever a human finger.

While you are out in the woods hunting or scouting for your favorite game animal, remember that an alert and aware hunter or huntress can always find something interesting to see!

Pitcher Plant Bloom (Sarracenia)

Pitcher plants are blooming in the forests of Florida. The bright-yellow blooms of the Sarracenia (pitcher plant) are fairly easy to spot. These carnivorous plants can be found around wet and swampy areas throughout Florida, which boasts more species of carnivorous plants than any other state in the United States. So if you're out turkey hunting this spring, you might want to hunt for these yellow beauties, too. They are just darn right pleasant to look at.

Florida Bobcat

Florida Bobcat

On a recent drive through the Tate's Hell Wildlife Management area in Franklin County, Florida, my wife Brenda and I spotted this bobcat (Lynx rufus). He appeared to be a full-grown bobcat judging by his size, which took up a pretty big chunk of a two-rut forest road. The average size for male bobcats is 39 inches in length and weigh about 24 pounds. The average size for female bobcats is 36 inches in length and weigh about 15 pounds. Bobcats will usually eat just about anything that moves. However, their main diet consists of rabbits, rats, and young white-tailed deer.

Bobcats are abundant throughout Florida and the hunting season on private land is December 1 through March 1. The hunting season for the Tate's Hell Wildlife Management area is, also, December 1 through March 1. As always, before you hunt in any wildlife management area, be sure to check the hunting season dates. Florida Black Bear

This Florida black bear meandered out of the woods while I was hunting with my deer dogs this past week in the Apalachicola Wildlife Management Area. It used to be that I would get a glimpse of a bear every now and then, but now I see them several times a week. That particular day, I was quick on the draw with my camera and managed to get his picture. Even though the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has removed the black bear from the list of State-designated Threatened Species (68A-27.003, F.A.C.), it is still unlawful to injure or kill bears. The only legal way to "take" a bear is with your camera!

I have talked with several hunters and campers in the Florida panhandle area over the past few months. Many of them have sighted bears in the woods and along the roads. Due to their increased numbers over the years, bears have been known to be a nuisance around campsites and even in towns and cities. The Florida bear population is estimated to be at more than 3,000. They're fun to look at in their natural habitat, but remember that bears are wild animals and have the ability to seriously harm humans if they feel threatened or they're defending their cubs. So it is best to keep your distance. If you feel threatened by a bear, the best thing to do is attempt to scare them away by making as much noise as possible, for example: yelling, blowing a horn, or banging pots and pans together.

In my neck of the woods, the sound of muzzleloaders, like mini-cannons, thunder through the trees this morning. A sure sign that muzzleloading gun season for Zone D has kicked off with a blast! Muzzleoading gun season for ZONE D runs from December 1 through December 7, 2012. General gun season picks up again in ZONE D on December 8, 2012 and runs through February 17, 2013.

General gun season opens today (December 1, 2012) and runs through February 17, 2013, for hunters in ZONE B. General gun season for hunters in ZONE A has already been going strong (ZONE A: November 17, 2012 through January, 6, 2013). As well, in ZONE C, hunters have been enjoying general gun season which runs from November 3, 2012 to JanuarY 20, 2013.

The above dates apply to hunting on PRIVATE LAND. Check out our Hunting Seasons page and click on the photo of the 2012-2013 Hunting Regulations for complete listing of hunting season dates. Also, click where it says "Click here for larger map of hunting zones" to find out which zone you are in.

Always remember that seaon dates may differ for hunting on private land and hunting in the public wildlife management areas. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will meet December 5 and 6, 2012, in Apalachicola to discuss Florida’s saltwater fishery, including possible game fish and sport fish designations and oyster populations in Apalachicola Bay; boating issues; hunting matters, including two new wildlife management areas; alligator harvesting; imperiled species updates and plans; and more.

My son Timothy Presnell had a little extra to be thankful for over the Thanksgiving weekend. After not being able to hunt for three years, due to conflicting work schedules, he harvested this nice 4-point buck. It was a great weekend for all involved. In addition to spending quality time with my son hunting, we were able to corral 20 family members into the hunt camp for a hardy Thanksgiving dinner.

Buck in Velvet: He may not look like much at this time but this little buck in velvet, with his sister, is the first antler deer that stood still for me long enough to get his picture taken.

If you watch the same areas from one year to the next, you begin to learn the distinctive antler characteristics of a specific gene pool. And this young buck appears to be the descendent of a tall 7-point that I observed last year on several occasions in the same area. Unfortunately, the elder deer went nocturnal right before archery season opened last year, and I never saw him in the daylight again. Maybe this young buck will hang around in the daylight, and I'll get a shot at him this season.

You may ask why would a buck loose his antlers each year? The reason is deer antlers are true bone and made up of calcium and phosphorus; and they are deciduous, which means that they drop off or shed each year. After the rut, a buck's testosterone level drops, and this causes him to shed his antlers. In just a few weeks new antlers begin to grow and continue through the spring and summer. The new developing antlers have a soft-brown covering called velvet. This velvet covering helps the antlers grow by providing them with blood and nourishment. Antlers can grow at a rate of 1/4 inch per day, which makes it one of the fastest types of tissue growth in mammals.

By the end of summer, the testosterone levels increase and the blood flow to the antlers decreases. This decrease in blood flow to the antlers, causes the velvet to dry out and is soon shed. It is not long before the new set of polished antlers is uncovered. The hard-horn buck is now ready to defend his territory against other bucks and to advertise to the females that he is a mature and healthy mate.
