Collin Stone, A Short Rainy Day in Turkey Heavan
by Collin Stone
Eastern Wild Turkey
It was the night before spring gobbler came in. It was raining out, and me and my older brother decided to see if we could put a gobbler in the roost. Finally, after 3 different spots, we got one to start gobbling back and we put him in the roost. We went home and got a good night's sleep.
We woke up a 6:15 and were out in our spot about 6:45. We were about 80 yards away from where he was roosting at, and it was still raining and thudering and lightning. He gobbled back a couple times, but not a lot; so we thought it was already with hens.
So we moved up. I spotted him and said, "Get down; there he is." We got down and got set up. He came around the bend and my brother said, "Shoot." And I did, and he was down.
He was my first turkey. When I grabbed him, I was shocked because he was way bigger than I could imagine. He had a 9-inch beard and had about a half-inch spur. We got him weighted, and he was 19 pounds. I was more exited than I ever was before at that point. And to top it off, I was out of the woods at 7:30. :)
