Can I hunt squirrel
and rabbit anytime?
March 12, 2012, QUESTION: I live in Lutz, Florida, and have a 9-year-old son. We have a small .410 shotgun, and I would like to take him squirrel and rabbit hunting. If I buy myself a permit, can I then take him to Upper Hillsborough Wildlife Management Area anytime to do this or only during "small game season"? Thanks.
ANSWER: Hello, Dave. Unfortunately, the small game season ended on March 4, 2012, for the Upper Hillsborough WMA; and there is no where that you can just walk through the woods any time of the year and hunt. Here is a link to the Upper-Hillsborough WMA for this season. The brochures for the next season will be coming out sometime in June or July. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied and be supervised by an adult at all times. The adult must be in possession of a picture ID, a hunting license, a management area stamp, and a quota permit. The small game and turkey quota permits are available at the check station each day on a first come, first served basis. For all other hunts, you will need to apply for and receive a quota permit through normal channels.
If you're interested in some outdoors activity for your son, you might want to take a look at the Ocala Youth Camp.
For the 12 to 17 year olds, there is the Youth Hunting Program.
Maybe you just want to go to a shooting range and get in some practice before next hunting season. If so, here's a list of Shooting Ranges Open to the Public.
Hope this information is helpful to you.
