January 20, 2012, QUESTION: Are there turkeys around the Clearwater Lake Recreation area in the Ocala National Forest?
I have a permit to hunt turkeys this spring in the pipeline unit. I am trying to find a place to bring the family to fish and camp. Thank you.
ANSWER: Although I've never hunted around the Clearwater Lake Recreation area, it looks like a pretty good place. With the Florida trail to the east of the recreation area and the water that runs northeast of the trail, it should provide you the opportunity to find turkeys in the northeast corner of the trail loop. If that doesn't prove fruitful, northeast of the hunt camp and northwest of the hunt camp looks very interesting because it's bordered by private property and their adjacent water features. A lot of times crops are grown on private property which attract wild game.
Good luck. Hope you fill your Spring limit of two bearded turkeys.
